The public has been invited to attend the Ribbon Cutting for the Henry County Annex of the Alabama Aviation College at the Headland Municipal Airport on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 10:30 am. Lunch will be provided for all those in attendance.
The Alabama Aviation College offers occupational programs at the main
campus in Ozark, at the Mobile branch, and at four classrooms in
Andalusia, Henry County, Albertville and Foley. With a statewide
mission and a dedication to serving industry and community, enrollment
has steadily increased over the years. Currently, approximately to 900
students are enrolled across the state and this number is expected to
increase.
The college is currently offering dual enrollment programs in the Henry
County School system and Andalusia schools which draw students from
nine area high schools. Dual enrollment offers high school students a
unique opportunity to attend college and earn college credit while
still in high school. The students receive the same training using the
same curriculum as their counterparts at the college level.
The tuition, books and tools are provided to the high school students
at no charge. A student can enter at the 10th grade level and attend
aviation classes until their senior year and start college with six of
the nine airframe subject taken. Students that participate in this
program can arrive at the college and have only one semester left
before being eligible to receive their airframe certification and
employment in the high wage industry with an annual salary of
approximately $40,000.
We are currently able to offer the first three courses at the high
school location but opening this facility will enable us to expand the
program to the first six classes to ensure continuity in the training
and have an aviation offering each semester to keep students focused
and reduce the burden of tuition on parents. The funding for this
course is provided exclusively from grants
and donations from our aviation industry partners, elected officials,
and the Headland Municipal Airport Authority who is pleased to see the
training begin at the high school level.
“We are very excited about the potential and importance of this venture
and encourage everyone to attend…, ” stated Stephanie Blankenship,
Airport Manager.
